It's subtle, but I think a good indicator of barry's character was when he first tried comforting sally. Before hugging her, he checks to make sure if she's okay with being held first. Now, granted he then proceeds to propose gaslighting and harassing the shit out of the network exec, but it is a good descriptor of barry himself - he's sweet, but definitely not the good person he envisions himself.
